Considering it’s only March, I’m going to say these aren’t my last.
1. Staying in the outskirts of the city, UAE
In the UAE, we stayed in an area called ‘Sharjah’ which on a map appears to be only 30 minutes out of the main city. I chose it because it was tons cheaper. It was a terrible idea. Firstly, the metro lines in Dubai city are fantastic but they only have several stops and need to be further developed. The traffic on the road – was terrible. We needed to catch a taxi everyday (an hour each way) to reach the nearest metro stop, so that we could then catch a packed train to our destination. Next time I’ll just pay more and stay in the city centre.
2. Staying the night on Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island is awesome but the ferry to get there is probably the most expensive in the Southern Hemisphere. It cost $200 return per person and more if you have a car. I didn’t realize this until after we’d organised the trip and it was too late to change our plans. If we were smarter, we would have instead joined a tour company from Adelaide to Kangaroo Island for a daytrip.
3. Whirlwind Travel Downfalls
I was so determined to see as much as possible during our Asia-Europe whirlwind travel adventure, that I forgot even I need a break sometimes. Next time I will give myself ‘imaginary weekends’ during my travelling trip to ensure I slow down our itinerary once a week.
4. Not checking the weather in the Middle East.
Big news! It snows in the Middle East.
5. Not planning to go overseas with my friends
Our Asia-Euro trip was last minute and taking advantage of some rare leave time as a result of both my husband and I being in between jobs. Therefore, we didn’t have an option to organise for some friends to perhaps join us. In the words of Josh at the end of our trip “Emma. Stop talking to me. I have nothing left to talk to you about.”
6. Spending more time in Jordan
Jordan was fabulous and I should have spent a week there. ALSO, if you go to Petra on certain days of the week, you can see The Treasury lit up by thousands of candles. Rad.
7. We spent a long time in Cambodia and Vietnam
We spent three weeks in Cambodia and Vietnam. As a personal preference, I think I would have skipped Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh. Maybe flown from Siam Reap to Hoi An instead. Although, the Cambodia’s Grand Palace is pretty spectacular.
8. Not realizing I needed my passport renewed
My passport had 18 months left on it (why oh why would it need to be renewed? A great question for the Australian passport office to answer as stated here) but because by the time I’d finished my work contract in Fiji it would have been expired, I needed to renew it. Irritating.
9. Hire a Tuk Tuk in Bangkok
We tried to travel cheaply by taking a local ferry to the Grand Palace of Bangkok, but after a long walk we arrived at the ferry and they chucked us on a tourist ferry anyway and then charged us a stupid landing fee. It would have been cheaper to hire a Tuk Tuk for the day and that’s what I’ll do next time.
10. Left our Easter Weekend booking too late
But it all worked out…
